On the 18th of May, CryptoAUSTRALIA participated in OAIC’s Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) with a documentary screening and expert panel discussion.

PAW is an annual initiative of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities forum. It is held every year promoting and raising awareness of privacy issues while highlighting the importance of protecting personal information. This year’s theme was Trust and Transparency, raising awareness around data handling practices of personal data throughout the information lifecycle.

CryptoAUSTRALIA brought the community together for learning and exchanging ideas about relevant privacy issues concerning everyday citizens.

The event had kicked off with a documentary titled ‘The Power of Privacy’ (watch here). In this film, The Guardian journalist Aleks Krotoski gave a short run-down of current privacy issues such as identity theft, information source protection and IoT security.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion with prominent representatives from Australian privacy organisations. The Panel featured Dr Elizabeth Coombs (NSW Privacy Commissioner), Dr Suelette Dreyfus (Executive Director, Blueprint for Free Speech), Jon Lawrence (Executive Officer, Electronic Frontiers Australia), David Vaile (Chair, Australian Privacy Foundation) and Professor Brian Martin (Vice President, Whistleblowers Australia). The discussions included current and upcoming challenges with recent developments and the direction of privacy in Australia.

We hope you enjoyed the night out as much as we did! We would like to thank all our guests for joining us, and our team is looking forward to seeing you in the future CryptoAUSTRALIA events.

We also thank our generous sponsors to let this event happen:
